Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) is hiring a Community Health and Conservation Field Officer
to support in the implementation of field activities in communities surrounding Bwindi Impenetrable National
Park (BINP).

registered NGO and non-profit that promotes biodiversity conservation by enabling people, gorillas and other
wildlife to coexist through improving their health and wellbeing in and around protected areas in Africa. CTPH
envisions ecosystems where wildlife and people thrive in shared, dynamic, resilient, and healthy environments.
CTPH is an established leader and pioneer in One Health and sustainable development, implementing integrated
human, animal and environmental health approaches.
We work with the government, local community, civil society and the private sector, currently with field
programs in 2 countries in Africa: Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), to implement three
main programmatic areas, which are integrated:
1. Wildlife Conservation including wildlife health
2. Community Health with a focus on One Health
3. Alternative Livelihoods for communities in proximity to protected conservation areas. This includes
activities to support sustainable coffee farming for smallholder farmers around Bwindi Impenetrable National
Park through CTPH’s award winning social enterprise, Gorilla Conservation Coffee (www.gccoffee.org).

The Community Health and Conservation Field Officer will:
– Lead implementation of CTPH community field programs, in collaboration and consultation with
supervisors and team members.
– Oversee and provide guidance for CTPH community volunteer cadres
– Manage and/or recruit community volunteers including Human and Gorilla Conflict Resolution Teams
(HUGOs-Gorilla Guardians) or Community Wildlife Scouts.
– Participate in recruitment of Village Health and Conservation Teams (VHCTs), in collaboration with
MOH.
– Supervise the work of Village Health and Conservation Teams (VHCTs) working with CTPH in
behavior change communication data collection and family planning·
– Support monitoring and evaluation of the data collected by VHCTs, and link them to the health centers,
including for supporting referrals and replenishment of medical supplies.
– Train VHCTs to deliver community health services and conservation education, in line with CTPH’s
mandate and trainings.
– Participate in training of Human and Gorilla Conflict Resolution Teams (HUGOs-Gorilla Guardians)
and other community resource persons reducing human and wildlife conflict.
– Engage Reformed Poachers in meaningful alternative livelihoods.
– Support VHCTs, and HUGOs to create group income generating projects and establish Village Saving
and Loan Associations (VSLAs).
– Attend VHCT and HUGO VSLA meetings and provide the relevant support in monitoring and
evaluation of their outputs and outcomes through data collection, home visits and quarterly meetings.
– Work with the CTPH Veterinary team to support the Community Animal Health Workers.
– Implement the Impenetrable Kids League Model and other conservation education programs in
schools.
– Participate in One Health research to support CTPH field programs.
– Provide logistical and mentoring support, where needed, to CTPH visitors in the field including
volunteers, practitioners, students, researchers, donors and the general public.
– Communicate CTPH vision, mission, mandate and approach clearly and effectively to all stakeholders
– Implement activities based on project work plans and budgets, as agreed with supervisors.
– Be the link between the community, local partners and CTPH on issues regarding conservation,
community health and livelihoods improvement.
– Support any other CTPH / GCCoffee projects and programs, as needed and requested.
Preferred Professional Qualifications, Experience and Characteristics
– A degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, Community Development, Social Work, Conservation or a
related field from a recognized University and a minimum of two years’ experience working in a
related field.
– Knowledge of conservation and protected area management is an added advantage.
– Knowledge of public health is an added advantage.
– Good communication and interpersonal skills.
– Team player requiring minimal supervision
– Experience working effectively with diverse stakeholders including the government and NGOs.
– Experience in working with local communities.
– Computer literacy (micro soft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
